Nanaimoite’s are fortunate to be surrounded by farmers dedicated to producing delicious quality food. There are many sources for these treasures. The Island Roots Co-operative Market is open year round on Wednesday afternoons at Pleasant Valley Community Hall. I had the pleasure of meandering through this market not long ago. I was impressed with the quality and variety offered. From artisan style breads, jams and baked goods to local produce, sausage and meats. Freshly roasted coffee beans, gluten free pies along with local wines filled the tables. I packed my bag full of local goodies and supported my local economy at the same time.

May to October, we will once again be able to purchase our local products at the Bowen Road Farmers Market. This market is located at Beban Park and is open later on Wednesday afternoons beginning May 11th from 4 to 6 pm. Also opening this Sunday Mother’s Day, May 8th, the Cedar Farmers Market at The Crow & Gate opens at 10am.

Buying more local veggies, meats and baked goods helps our local economy. Buying local can also enrich our sense of being a part of the community. How many people can create a ten mile meal? For instance, you could start with a juicy roasted chicken from Cedar Valley Farms. An excellent side dish with your chicken would be baked winter squash or root veggies from Gary Argle’s Farm. Season those veggies with honey from Fredrich’s Honey Farm in Yellow Point. Create a simple salad of nettle, kale and arugula that are currently in season. And there you have it. You’ve just created your own 10 mile meal. Image your family’s next meal created by you with healthy, fresh, local ingredients. What an amazing way to engage your family in the farm to table movement.

On Monday, May 30th Chefs Sarah Bingham and Kristina Stauffer the dynamic duo behind Food Ink Catering and Events and The Cassidy Country Kitchen will be hosing a “Meatless Monday” cooking class featuring local fare. Tickets are $40 and include wine pairings and can be purchased on-line or by calling 250-585-2275. Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be available at the door.
